Our Story — Vas and Son, Vas Bakery, Mangalore, since 1905

The story of Vas Bakery began with Emmanuel Vas — known to everyone as Monam — born on 5 July 1879. At a very young age he came to Mangalore and began learning the art of baking while at work in one of the region’s early bakeries.

Through determination and hard work, and as a pioneer in the bakery and confectionery trade, he opened his own bakery in 1905 in a small rented space in the heart of the city, under the name and style of M. Vas and Son on Bendore Church Road.

Strengthening his career, he built an excellent reputation as one of the finest bakers, with local support, supervising the production himself every single day.

Sebastian Vas — Bostab — was born on 5 July 1916, sharing the very same birthdate as his father. He carried the family tradition forward with honesty, humility and vision.

He broadened the bakery’s reach, supplying fresh bread to hospitals, institutions and residential communities across Mangalore. As demand grew he established a fully mechanised factory at Maroli, Kulshekar — a 2.5-acre campus on imported production lines.

Under his leadership Vas Bakery employed more than forty people and became one of the region’s most respected bakeries. With the support of his family and his customers, he continued his father’s legacy as Vas and Sons — existing to this date.

Bryan Julius Vas, soon after his Bachelor of Commerce, assumed responsibilities, following in the footsteps of his father.

With the guidance of his father, he monitored the day-to-day work, attending to all the needs of the general public.

He has faithfully preserved the traditions that have defined Vas Bakery for generations while embracing the evolving needs of modern customers — running the business with the same quality and production, keeping his grandfather’s motto as his first priority.

Today Vas Bakery stands as one of Mangalore’s oldest operating bakeries, at Vas Mahal, Bendore Circle — one of the city’s most recognised landmarks — with modern production facilities that combine traditional methods with contemporary technology.

Across four generations our commitment has remained unchanged: quality baked goods made with nostalgic recipes, fondly recommended by our customers, who trust our honest workmanship and genuine care for every customer.

From humble beginnings in 1905 to a cherished Mangalore landmark, this journey has always been about more than baking. It has been about family, tradition, community, and earning the trust of generations.
